SANJAY DUTT

Sanjay Dutt has an affinity for trouble. His acting apart, he is in the news for all the wrong reasons – drugs, AK47, and his affairs of the heart.

Fate’s Child
Sanjay Balraj Dutt, known as Sanju Baba, was born on 29 July 1959 to acclaimed actors and Padma Shri Award winners Nargis and Sunil Dutt. Nargis Dutt died after she was diagnosed with cancer while Sunil Dutt passed away in 2005 at the time of which he was the Sports Minister. He has two sisters – Namrata married to Kumar Gaurav and Priya Dutt who is a Member of Parliament. He studied at the Lawrence School, Sanawar.

Sanjay Dutt married Richa Sharma in 1987 and the couple had a daughter, Trishala. Soon after her birth, Richa Sharma was diagnosed with cancer and the couple separated. Richa passed away in 1996 after which his in laws won custody of his daughter and she lives in the US.

He married Rhea Pillai, an Art of Living instructor in 1998, whom he later divorced in 2005. He married Manyata Dilnawaz Shaikh in 2008 which was caught up in a controversy when the news that Manyata was already married surfaced and their marriage certificate was invalid. However that blew over and they are very much married to each other.

Sanjay Dutt, soon after the death of his mother, started abusing drugs and was sent to a rehabilitation center in Texas.

In 1993, he was arrested as he was said to have played a part in the 1993 Bombay Bombings. After several court hearings he was found guilty of illegal possession of an AK47 rifle but not of terrorism. His release was opposed via a petition filed and he was sentenced to six years of imprisonment in 2007 and was duly granted bail.

Lage Raho
1981 to 1989 Sanjay Dutt made his debut in 1981 with Rocky that was directed and produced by his father Sunil Dutt. The movie that was released a few weeks after his mother Nargis’ death was an average performer. He acted in movies like Vidhata, Hathyar, Mein Awaara Hoon, Do Dilon Ki Daastan, Imandar, and Taqatwar.

1990 to 1999 Sadak and Saajan in 1991 worked well at the box office. Subash Ghai’s Khalnayak had him playing the criminal Ballu and was a blockbuster. There were releases like Amaanat, Daud, Dushman, and then Manjrekar’s Vaastav in 1999 in which his performance as a hitman was recognized with the Filmfare Best Actor Award. He won the Critic’s Award for his role in Mission Kashmir.

2000 to 2009 Dutt’s initial releases in 2000 and onwards were Kurukshetra, Raju Chacha, Jodi No.1, Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin, and Kaante. Munnabhai MBBS in 2003 is a role he is now famously associated with and of course, his jhappis. It won him the Filmfare Best Comedian Award. The movie won several awards and became a success in India and overseas. He saw a mix of hits, flops, and average performers with the release of Rudraksh, Shabd, Tango Charlie, Parineeta, Vah! Life Ho Tho Aisi, and Zinda amongst many others. The sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai was immensely popular in 2006.

Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007 and Kidnap in 2008 also enjoyed a good run at the box office.

His first release in 2009 was Luck which didn’t bring him much luck. After this he was seen as the evil Ringmaster in Aladin. In Blue, he was seen hunting for treasure with Akshay Kumar and Zayed Khan.

2010 He will be playing the lead in the Pink Panther inspired Chatur Singh Two Star. In Lamhaa, along with Bipasha Basu, he tries to put a stop to a plot being hatched in Kashmir. We may also see the third installment of Munnabhai called Munnabhai Chale Amerika.
